SGI Altix Surpasses Competitors by Up to Eight Times in New HPC Challenge Benchmark Tests

Silicon Graphics (NYSE: SGI) today announced its award-winning SGI(R) Altix(R) 3000 system has beaten comparable servers from IBM, Cray and Sun on performance tests that comprise the new HPC Challenge Benchmark. The results reveal that SGI Altix delivers as much as eight times the performance of IBM servers and four times the performance of Cray supercomputers in key categories.

SGI Announces Preliminary Financial Results for the Third Fiscal Quarter

SGI (NYSE: SGI - News) today announced preliminary financial results for the third fiscal quarter ended March 25, 2005. The Company is projecting quarterly revenue of approximately $160 million and an estimated operating loss of approximately $45 million. The projected operating loss includes restructuring charges of approximately $15 million incurred primarily in connection with the restructuring actions that were initiated in February 2005. Without these charges, the non-GAAP operating loss is expected to be approximately $30 million. In its January 25, 2005 conference call, the Company had previously forecast revenue for the third quarter in the range of $180 million to $200 million.

Today, the network includes two Origin 3800 machines, two Origin 3900s and two 12-processor Origin systems, which are clustered because the center's work is continuous and the output of one job often contributes to the input of the next, Clancy said. The systems are connected through SGI's shared-file system, called InfiniteStorage Shared Filesystem CXFS, which permits data to be passed among operating systems without any replicating.

THERE HAS BEEN LITTLE good news for Intel on the Itanium front of late, just retreat after retreat, and a low end market that pretty much vanished. SGI Reports Third Quarter Financial Results

Silicon Graphics (NYSE: SGI) today announced results for its third fiscal quarter which ended March 25, 2005. Revenue for the third quarter was $159 million, in line with the preliminary results announced April 7, 2005. Gross margin was 34.5%
compared with 37.5% in the second quarter. SGI's third-quarter operating loss was $45 million, compared with an operating loss of $9 million in the second quarter. The third-quarter net loss was $45 million or $0.17 per share, compared with a net loss of $11 million or $0.04 per share in the second quarter.

SGI to release Itanium workstation

Shortly after rival Hewlett-Packard withdrew from the market, Silicon Graphics has begun selling a new workstation with Intel's Itanium processor.
SGI's new system, which costs between $8,500 and $39,000, accommodates one or two Itanium 2 processors and as much as 24GB of memory, the company is expected to announce Tuesday. It's based on the same technology, including the Linux operating system and ATI graphics hardware, as the company's higher-end Prism products introduced last October.

Petroleum engineering sector in UAE gets massive productivity boost from SGI Altix 350 series architecture

Abu Dhabi-based Zakum Development Company (ZADCO), one of the leading operating companies in the UAE’s oil industry, has been able to cut the time taken to carry out reservoir simulation calculations on its supercomputers from two weeks to just 50 hours, resulting in a massive productivity gain for its Reservoir Modelling Teams.
This follows the installation by SGI and Emirates Computers of a cluster of 64-bit SGI Altix 350 Linux-based supercomputers incorporating breakthrough Itanium II processor technology at the oil company's Abu Dhabi offices.
